FroYo stops my HTC Desire connecting to 3

I was really excited to see that version 2.2 of Android was available over the air for my Three HTC Desire. I've had Three phones before that were shipped with strange branches of firmware that stopped you updating them. Android was supposed to be different but I kinda didnt trust Three.

Anyway today at lunchtime my mobile informed me that an update was available but suggested that I download the 90Meg update over wifi. I was out and about but finally connected to free WiFi at MacDonalds. By the time I had downloaded 30% of the update though I had to go back to work so didnt get to play.

When I got home the phone seemed to just pick up where it left off, and after a few moments and a reboot I have FroYo via an OTA update. Clever..

But NO INTERNET! No matter what I did I couldn't connect via 3g anymore. Arg! It would connect fine over wifi, but its mobile that I need.

I googled and googled, but it took me a long time to work put what to do to fix it. Its not limited to Three, and not just to the Desire, but maybe other people on Three will find this useful.

See how I fixed it after the jump.

Here's how I fixed it:

Go into:

Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks (The second one, which has Set options for roaming, networks, APNs underneath)

Touch Access Point Names

Press the menu button and touch Reset to default

After the pause, you should still see an access point name called 3 on the phone. Make sure the radio button next to 3 is selected (IE green, not grey)

Press the power button and power off the phone.

When I powered it back on it had connected.

Just in case you need them, here are my APN settings for Three:
